The Role
As a Fire Engineer you will report to the Director for Fire Safety Services.
Job Description
- Fire Risk Assessment (intrusive and non-intrusive) of high rise, and high-risk buildings, including FRAEW (PAS 9980), identifying areas of non-compliance with fire safety regulations, focusing on cladding, fire-stopping, escape routes, and other potential hazards, analysing potential for fire spread within the building and the potential impact on its structure.
- Fire Safety and Design Planning for new builds, renovations and conversions (including change of use), remedial packages for high-risk buildings. Producing Fire Safety Strategy reports for planning and building control approval, that adhere to local building codes and fire safety standards. Liaising with design and construction teams to guarantee understanding and adoption of all elements of the strategy to ensure safety of the building design.
- Make recommendation for suitable construction materials to achieve adequate compartmentation and prevent spread of smoke and fire.
- Review design by others to confirm compliance with Building Regulations, local codes and fire safety standards.
- Ensure that fire safety strategies and solutions comply with current legislation and regulations, such as the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 (or local equivalent), and building control standards.
- Liaise with local authorities, building safety regulator and building inspectors, and fire safety enforcement bodies to ensure proper certifications are obtained and all legal requirements are met.
- Evaluate materials used in construction to determine their fire resistance, particularly for cladding, insulation, and other exterior finishes. Recommend alternate fire-resistant materials when non-compliant materials are identified.
- Design and produce evacuation strategies, liaising with property managers, residents and board members for buildings to ensure that policy and procedure are understood and implemented adequately.
- Assess the access for the fire service to buildings and fire safety provisions (such as, dry risers, SIB’s, firefighting equipment), identify non-compliance within existing buildings and as part of design packages.
- Produce reports, such as fire safety strategies, fire engineering justifications, compliance reports, fire risk assessments, timber frame fire risk assessments, FRAEW reports, outlining the identified risks, hazards, remedial strategies, and progress of actions being undertaken.
- Maintain robust notes and evidence from site visits as part of due diligence.
- Carry out inspections during construction, monitoring remedial works, and provide guidance to site teams on maintaining compliance during construction minimising the risk of ignition and spread of fire.
- Keep up to date with current and changing fire safety standards and legislation, particularly for high risk or complex buildings.
Person Specifications
- Qualified to degree level or hold a Level 5 Diploma in a relevant discipline, e.g. Fire Engineering, along with demonstrable experience of the use and application of fire safety engineering to a range of buildings, both in a commercial and residential environment.
- Understanding of fire safety requirements within Building Regulations, local codes, British Standards (e.g. BS 9999, 9991), and specific industry/premises guidance (e.g. BB100).
- An understanding and working knowledge of quantified analytical techniques (e.g. smoke control calculations and thermal radiation analyses).
- Able to confidently liaise with local authorities, the fire service, the Building Safety Regulator and Building Inspectors to reach an agreeable and desired outcome, and resolve issues in a timely manner, keeping the client briefed, as necessary.
- An understanding of Building Services Engineering and interdisciplinary design through all stages of the design process.
- An appreciation of the importance of complementary specialisms such as CFD modelling, structural engineering and Building Services in the design of buildings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent time management and ability to work as part of a team and under own initiative.
- Ability to demonstrate strong general IT skills and software knowledge.
- Ability and desire to mentor and train others within the team.
- Awareness of current legislation and technology within scope of work, and evidence of CPD.
- Membership of IFE desirable.
- Prepared to travel within the South and South East on a regular basis (wider afield as required) and have a full driving licence.
